Period of the Spring and Autumn Annals

Period of the Spring and Autumn Annals

Covering the years 722 to 481 B.C., this period is conventionally called the Spring and Autumn period (Chunqiu) after a name of a chronicle of the Lu Kingdom, in Shandong.

From an artistic point of view, during the Spring and Autumn period, the quality of bronze casting declined in Northern China whereas in the south (Hubei, Hunan) bronze workers show a high level of casting skill. Waste wax casting appeared in  the 6th century B.C.,  but was rarely used.
