The conquest of China by Qin Shihuangdi, the first Qin emperor in 221 B.C., marks the beginning of imperial dynasty. The reform and unification of script, the standardization of weight and measures, of metal currency from a strong basis to a further development of a sole effective political authority which could not be challenged by a rival regime, are among the main changes brought by this new dynasty. The burning of the non-technical books in 213 B.C. with the execution of the literari which followed and an autocratic policy explain the collapse of the regime in 206 B.C.
