Upper Part of a Stele

Upper Part of a Stele

8th century
Grès
H.:22 cm
M.C. 5912

On each side of this Upper Part of a Stele, a preaching scene is surmounted by vigorously carved intertwined snake-like dragons. The Buddha, seated on a lotus, is surrounded by two disciples and two bodhisattvas. The shape of the lotus differs on each side and that leads us to think that two different episodes in Śākyamuni's life are represented.
