Warrior

Warrior

7th century, Tang Dynasty (618 – 907)
Southern China (?)
Terra cotta with traces of polychromy and gold
H : 7.7 cm L : 41.5 cm W : 24.5 cm
M.C. 2000-4

This impressive, irate figure, with a particularly expressive face, in a vehement pose, once held a broadsword in his right hand. He represents a rare model, absent from most public collections.

Note the strongly projected elements, such as the horns that decorate the shoulders and the figure’s bushy eyebrows. These details are not found on pieces from the two provinces at the heart of the empire, Shaanxi and Henan. The light beige colour suggests that this work is from southern China.
