A contemporary of Takeuchi Kôzo, Niisato Akio was born the same year but comes from the Chiba prefecture. However, they are developing their work along very different lines. Luminous Vessel demonstrates Niisato’s fascination with the translucency of porcelain. He sees his vessels as “light containers”. For maximum transparency, the piece is shaped on the wheel until its walls are extremely thin. These are then trimmed and pierced with an electric tool, creating an effect somewhat reminiscent of the “rice grain” effect in Chinese porcelain. After first baking, a translucent glaze is applied by hand on the holes, then with a compressor over the whole surface of the piece. Several firings are necessary to fill the holes.
