Before settling in Paris in 1986, Ma Desheng was one of the cofounding members of the Xingxing (“Stars”) group, the first post-Maoist dissident art movement. The two ink paintings on paper of 1990 and 1991 illustrate the style and subjects he had favoured since the early 1980s. Wide brushstrokes, the rejection of the academic rules of composition, the stylisation of landscape and sexually suggestive female nudes demonstrate Ma Desheng’s wish to renew traditional ink painting through a rupture of theme and technique.
