In the second half of the 19th century, the accounts of explorers and archaeologists who rediscovered Angkor and the mythic sites of South East Asia fascinated many French painters. Some of them embarked on a grand tour to explore the landscapes and the refined, ancient cultures of Indochina.

In mainland France, international and colonial expositions introduced visitors to the Far East.

The painter Victor Tardieu travelled to Tonkin in 1921 as a result of a commission. He fell under its charm and decided to settle in Hanoi. There, he founded the École des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine, which he headed until his death. This was the French colonial period, and the school relied on painters who were versed in Western artistic practices. Talented young Vietnamese artists made the most of the new materials at their disposal, and invented an original style, combining Asian traditions of lacquerwork and silk with new techniques.

Du fleuve Rouge au Mékong presents a wide range of 75 works by over 40 Vietnamese and French sculptors, painters and lacquer artists.
