The end of the Wei dynasty saw a combination of two styles characteristic of the Northern Wei, as in this Head of Buddha. The hair is arranged in spiralling locks covering the whole head including a very prominent ushnisha. Its swirls are reminiscent of similar motifs on the wall paintings of Dunhuang (Gansu), which are contemporary with this head.
