Shigekazu Nagae specialises in liquid porcelain casting, a technique introduced to Japan from the West in the 19th century, but which hadn’t been used to produce abstract or conceptual forms. After using a liquid porcelain slip-casting process to make large dishes with thin walls resembling nets or loose weaves, he created parallelepipeds or interlaced bands of porcelain, like this work in the Cernuschi Museum. The forms are suspended in the kiln during firing to prevent deformation, and a glaze is then applied in between the separate parts to join them together.
Shigekazu Nagae has won numerous awards for his original works.
