Setsuko Nagasawa graduated from the Kyoto City University of Arts, where she was a pupil of Tomimoto Kenkichi. In Geneva, she taught at the École des Arts Décoratifs and the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. She then settled in Paris. She belongs to a reformative movement of Japanese ceramics, following after artists such as Ito Keiji. Her pieces and installations with their clean, precise forms are often produced by smoke firing, as is the case here. This process enables her to achieve a uniquely velvety surface, enhanced by the play of colours.
