The central motif of two fish is reminiscent, or evocative, of the same motif found in Han era basins; here, they are treated in a very different style, on a lotus flower background. Around the rim, the eight trigrams (bagua 八卦) of the divination text Yijing (I Ching) (Book of Changes) appear among floral motifs. Basins of the same shape depicting lotus-bearing children also exist.
