This work dates from the artist’s mature period. Two arhats (luohans) appear among steep rocks. One of them, top left, extends his hand to the other, below right.
Despite his modest origins, Wang Zhen became an accomplished businessman. He was an entrepreneur, a lay Buddhist (jushi) and politician, and ran numerous charity and religious organisations in Shanghai. A pupil of Ren Bonian (1840-1896) and Wu Changshuo (1844-1927), with whom he became close friends, he was a prolific artist. He used his powerful stroke and vivid colours, learnt from his master Wu Changshuo, in figure painting in particular, the genre for which Ren Bonian gained recognition. As a fervent Buddhist, he infused great vigour into his portrayals of saints and monks.
