Eiko Kishi developed an original decorative technique, which she uses on pieces inspired by the movements of Noh theatre performers. The ceramics’ rectilinear forms evoke their starched costumes. To create them, the artist uses a process based on a mixture of raw clay and a dozen types of chamotte (or grog, fired clay) coloured and reduced to small fragments of different sizes. Before the clay is completely dry, she incises the surface of the piece with pins and planes to reveal the various colours of the chamotte. This process is very lengthy and difficult to implement because of the random element, meaning that the pieces cannot be made in large numbers.
Eiko Kishi exhibits regularly at many biennials, and her works have joined the collections of several American museums (Brooklyn Museum, Metropolitan Museum in New York). She was a prizewinner at the Faenza competition (silver medal) in 1999 and in Vallauris (2002).
