Yasuo Hayashi was one of the founders, along with Uno Sango, of the post-war ceramic renovation movement for the art of flower arrangement (ikebana). Working with the masters of avant-garde floral art, he invented new forms. He also participated in the Sôdeisha movement in Kyōto and in the development of a sculptural ceramic art, expressing an interest in constructivism from early on. In 1972, he won the Grand Prix at the Vallauris Biennale, and focused in his work on optical effects, using notably coloured engobes and a brown ochre irabo glaze.
