Don fouilles : Mission Janse Indochine (1934-1935)

M.C. 10982

This bowl comes from Tomb No. 2 excavated in 1935 by Olov Janse in Đông Sơn village. The long brick tomb was 1.91 m long and 57 cm wide. The very limited funerary equipment included two bowls, including this one, an offering stand and three jars placed outside the tomb against the east wall.
This small, thick and heavy bowl is made of a light-coloured dense clay. It is coated with a runny glaze that has crackled all over. The increasingly intense greenish-brown colour of the glazes of the ceramics of the An Nam period reflects the influence of the contemporary stoneware from south-east China. Similarly, the more robust and less diversified forms resemble those of the pieces found in southern China since the Six Dynasties period (4th – 5th centuries).
