This catalogue presents for the first time a selection of more than 300 pieces among the 1,600 or so making up Japanese ceramics collection at the Cernuschi Museum.
Acquired mostly by Henri Cernuschi (1821-1896), notably during his 1871 visit to Japan, these artefacts, largely unknown in Europe at the time, were a revelation for French ceramicists and Japonistes in the late 19th century.
The growing interest, in Japan, in the Edo period (1615-1867), which laid the foundations of modern Japan, offers a new look at this remarkable ensemble.
