Openwork patterns form a highly stylised kui-type dragon, with an eye in high relief. The two clawed feet, dorsal crest and open jaws are also very visible. The cylindrical socket enabled the piece to be wedged onto a shaft. The purpose of such a shaft, possibly a banner (biaozhang zhi) or a chariot decoration, is unknown. The two eyelets were for attaching removable ornaments. In its expressive design, this piece is representative of the Western Zhou aesthetic.
