This charming dish has the delicate motif of an open lotus flower with pistils and petals in light relief and polychrome. This type of relief was obtained by impression in a mould of clay that was still soft. A number of such moulds have been preserved.
Comparable dishes exist with more or less explicit or coloured lotus motifs. The Cernuschi Museum specimen has a scalloped lip heralding the delicate designs of the Five Dynasties (907-960) and Song dynasty (960-1279) periods.
